Scottish, Central West Area news

09 July 2019

Scotland July News

June Meet Night saw us half way through the year and it is taking us into the heart of our rally season, already the area has seen a few rally’s in addition to Drive it Day.  For most of the rally’s we have been fortunate with the weather despite the temperatures being a lot cooler than normal for this time of the year, hopefully the temperature will rise for the remainder of the summer and at minimum give us some warm rain.  We had a good turnout for the June meet and a few of us met for some pre meet scran, (Sultanas, Currants, Raisins And Nuts) the service and staff in this harvester is night and day in comparison to our previous meeting venue.
Millport Rally was yet again a fantastic day, the weather was not as hot as last year but the sun was shining and everyone had a fantastic day.  Half a dozen of us decided to get our yearly exercise in and hired bikes to cycle around the island, we made it half way when we had to stop for lunch and refreshments.  This is becoming a popular show for our area so get this one in your diary for next year.
Thirlestane car rally was one that I never manged to attend but everyone I spoke with had a glowing report about the event.  Several of the members took their vans and stayed in a nearby caravan park, several others decided to attend the show on Sunday and said it was such a big show to see everything in a day, therefore maybe a weekend for most of us will be the answer for next year.
Retrofestival was my first show south of the border early June and the weather was fine until I hit the A66 where it poured until I got to my accommodation.  The festival is hosted in Newark Showground and is a pretty good venue, nice and flat and firm ground for the cars even if it rains.  The main show days were pretty busy considering the weather was not good on the Saturday and it was cold.  The event is different to the normal shows we are used to, firstly the cars – there was around 2-300 on display and from that there were a handful of classics, mines was the only Triumph there.  The remainder was American cars, hot/ratrods and other custom cars.  What was impressive was the camping space and the volume and variety of vans, they ranged from very old classics to very expensive Winnebago’s, there were also at least a dozen of very nice airstream vans there.  There were some traders there but don’t expect to find an illusive Triumph part.  Bearing in mind the name of the event is Retrofestival and it certainly was that, there were a choice of 3 venues, The black Hanger which hosted 50’s big band music and dancing,  The Spitfire Pavilion which hosted 60’s music and the Alternative Stage which covered 70/80’s music, the stage for the later was open air.  All 3 venues had several bands, groups or singers and they were on all day and into the evening.  The verdict-  how is it as a show, the cars are different but very interesting, the venue is a very decent one and plenty indoor areas if the weather is bad, the big plus for me was the entertainment, There were in the region of 5,000 people in attendance, it was different and to be honest a nice change from the cars and events we normally attend, the question is, would I go again – certainly, entry if you display your car is 10 smackaroonies for the whole weekend. There is a RetroFestival in Newbury which is much further down but is 4 times the size of Newark.
Upcoming Event Information
Colin was looking for entries for Biggar rally in August, this event is on the Saturday prior to our Triumph event down south and that appears to have greatly reduced the uptake.  The evening seen a good handful of classic cars including the Spitford.
Moffat will have passed by the time you read this report and I am sure the event will as ever not disappoint us.  This year we have 14 spaces so the display should have been a good one.
Glamis Castle Rally is on the 13/14th July and Dave Fray has the tickets in his possession ready for distribution, if this report reaches your doorstep before the July meet night you can collect them from Dave on the night, otherwise contact Dave to arrange ticket collection.
General Chat – I know several of us have been busy getting our cars ready and anticipating the summer to arrive.  Alan Well’s GT6 has some tin worm and he has decided to take it off the road until he feels it is in a safer condition.
Ian walker has been busy working mainly on the running infrastructure of his Vitesse, knowing Ian the running gear will be in tip top condition and he will have the car driving to his satisfaction.
Colin had been messing with the hand brake on his Vitesse and has a better hold now, he also has purchased a spanking new hood and is in the process of fitting it, really looking forward to seeing it Colin.
Mark & Jaqui have refitted the wee van that they bought for the events and used it at Thirlestone.  Due to the additional gear that they carry when travelling with the van, they will not always have the capacity to take the area shelters, etc to the events, therefore if you have capacity to help out in this area please let M&J know.
As usual I am preparing this area report at the 11th hour so any anomalies are asked to be excused. Any items or suggestions for the Area Report then please let me know.
Fingers crossed for better weather - Michael
